US, Japan, South Korea Voice Concern Over Taiwan and South China Sea

The foreign ministers of South Korea, Japan and the United States have issued a joint statement warning against increasingly frequent destabilizing activities around Taiwan.

Meeting in New York on Monday, the three also declared strong opposition to unlawful maritime claims in the South China Sea and efforts to enforce them. While the statement did not name China, it comes amid heightened tensions between Beijing and Washington and its allies over the contested waters.

China’s foreign ministry condemned the remarks, calling them “irresponsible” and urging the nations to stop supporting separatist activities linked to Taiwan independence. On the South China Sea, spokesperson Guo Jiakun said regional countries should resolve disputes through dialogue and avoid provoking confrontation.

Taiwan’s foreign ministry welcomed the concern and pledged to work with the US, Japan, South Korea and other partners to maintain peace in the Taiwan Strait and Indo-Pacific.

The ministers also reaffirmed their commitment to ending North Korea’s nuclear program. China claims most of the South China Sea, overlapping the exclusive economic zones of several Southeast Asian nations, with disputes over islands and features unresolved for years.
