Goals for Gaza: Norway Turns Football into Humanitarian Action

2 min read

In a bold and compassionate move, the Norwegian Football Federation has announced that all profits from its upcoming World Cup qualifier against Israel will be donated to humanitarian aid efforts in Gaza. The match is scheduled for October 11 in Oslo, and will be hosted at Ullevaal Stadium, where ticket sales typically draw crowds of up to 26,000.

Federation President Lise Klaveness emphasized that the organization “cannot remain indifferent” to the suffering of civilians in Gaza, especially children, amid ongoing violence and humanitarian collapse. While the exact donation amount remains undisclosed, the gesture has already sent ripples through the global sports community as a powerful symbol of solidarity.

Security concerns surrounding the match have prompted Norwegian authorities to reduce stadium capacity by 3,000 seats. Meanwhile, Israel-unable to host international games since late 2023-will play as the visiting team. Norway previously defeated Israel 4-2 in their March qualifier and currently leads their group standings.

The decision has sparked political tension, with the Israeli Football Association issuing a sharp response, urging Norway to also condemn attacks by Hamas and warning against funds being misused. Despite the controversy, Norway remains firm in its commitment to channel the proceeds to organizations providing life-saving aid on the ground in Gaza.
