Monica Bellucci graced the Marrakech International Film Festival in an elegant all-black ensemble, complete with a trench coat and sleek, poker-straight hair. Speaking fluently in French, she captivated attendees with insights into her latest project—a documentary honoring opera legend Maria Callas.
“Maria Callas was fearless, embracing risks and living with a sincerity that resonates deeply,” Bellucci shared during an exclusive conversation at the YSL Museum in Marrakech. She highlighted her personal connection to Callas, revealing, “Through her writings, I discovered Maria—the person behind the voice. Vulnerable, passionate, deeply human.”
Bellucci reflected on Callas’ profound sacrifices, particularly her longing for a family, which added emotional depth to her portrayal. “Her greatest wound was that she didn’t have children,” Bellucci noted. “That struck me deeply because it highlights the personal cost of greatness. She was a woman torn between her passion and what she couldn’t have.”
The actress’s exploration of Callas extended beyond film; she also embraced the challenge of portraying the soprano on stage, an experience that pushed her artistic boundaries. “Theater is raw and unforgiving. You can’t hide; you can’t fake anything,” she explained. “There’s a direct relationship with the audience, demanding complete honesty.”
Bellucci faced the challenge of mastering the role in three languages—Italian, French, and English—describing the process as both daunting and rewarding.
