The 2026 State of Origin decider has officially become the highest‑rating television broadcast in the 45‑year history of the interstate rugby league series, with 4.29 million viewers tuning in on average as NSW stunned Queensland to reclaim the shield.
The record‑breaking audience comes just days after the NRL signed a $5.3 billion broadcast deal, the richest in Australian sporting history. Broadcaster Channel Nine confirmed the milestone on Thursday, noting the decider narrowly surpassed Origin II earlier this year, which drew 4.286 million viewers.
This year’s 4.29 million average audience marks a 9.2% increase on last year’s decider. In total, 6.032 million Australians watched at least part of the match, making it the highest‑rating TV program of 2026 and the top program of the night in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth.
Streaming numbers also surged. A massive 1.685 million viewers streamed the game a 70.9% year‑on‑year increase compared with the corresponding fixture in 2025.
The Origin decider’s record viewership underscores the series’ enduring dominance in Australian sport and highlights the growing shift toward digital streaming alongside traditional broadcast audiences.
