Madonna’s New Album Misses Australian Charts as AI Controversy Erupts Over ‘Like a Prayer’ Cover

2 min read

Madonna may have released one of the most critically acclaimed and addictive pop albums of the year, but none of the tracks from Confessions II have cracked the Australian charts a surprising twist for a star whose influence usually dominates global rankings. Instead, one of the hottest songs in Australia right now is a cover of her 1989 classic “Like a Prayer”, produced by Queensland DJ Josh Fawaz.

The track’s sudden rise has sparked backlash within parts of the music industry, with critics alleging it was created using AI‑powered audio engineering tools. Fawaz has not publicly confirmed the use of artificial intelligence, but the debate has intensified as the song climbs higher than any of Madonna’s new releases.

Meanwhile, Confessions II is expected to make a strong debut on the Billboard charts and is still likely to chart in Australia once momentum builds. Yet the irony hasn’t gone unnoticed. Samantha Bennett, professor of music at the Australian National University and chair of the International Association for the Study of Popular Music, said it was striking and somewhat humorous that a reimagined version of a decades‑old Madonna hit is outperforming her latest work.

As the conversation around AI in music continues to grow, Australia’s charts have become an unexpected flashpoint, highlighting how technology, nostalgia and pop culture collide in unpredictable ways.
