Extreme weather has battered southern and central China this week, unleashing torrential rain and severe flooding across Guangxi and a super typhoon is now tracking toward eastern provinces, threatening further destruction.

State news agency Xinhua reported that 26 of the deaths were linked to a dam breach at the Liulan Reservoir, where seven people remain missing. When AFP reporters reached Liulan on Wednesday, floodwaters had receded, but thick mud coated streets and homes, leaving behind scenes of widespread devastation.

Rescue teams continued delivering supplies using large drones, sending food and essentials to residents stranded across the river. Earlier CCTV footage showed torrents of water blasting through the shattered concrete walls of the reservoir dam, while emergency crews in life vests navigated the area in inflatable boats.

Residents were seen clearing out their wrecked homes, some using excavators to remove damaged belongings a stark reminder of the scale of destruction left behind.
