Verstappen Secures First Pole of Season as Hamilton Joins Him on Front Row in Malaysia

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen claimed his first pole position of the 2026 Formula One season after producing the fastest lap in qualifying for the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia on Saturday, setting up a highly anticipated battle with Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton, who qualified second.

The result marks the first time since the 2023 Hungarian Grand Prix that Verstappen and Hamilton, two of Formula One’s most decorated rivals, have shared the front row of the starting grid.

Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar initially qualified third fastest but will start eighth after serving a grid penalty. His demotion promotes championship leader Kimi Antonelli to third on the grid, alongside Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc on the second row.

Meanwhile, George Russell, fresh from his dramatic victory at last week’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix, endured a frustrating qualifying session and will start seventh. The result was particularly disappointing for Mercedes, which arrived in Malaysia with a significant upgrade package aimed at boosting competitiveness.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff admitted the team’s performance was unexpected.

“It’s very difficult to understand,” Wolff told Sky Sports after qualifying, as Mercedes continued to analyze why the upgrades failed to deliver the anticipated gains.

With Verstappen back on pole, Hamilton alongside him, and Antonelli leading the championship fight, Sunday’s race is shaping up to be one of the most intriguing contests of the season. The front-row showdown between Verstappen and Hamilton is expected to reignite one of Formula One’s most compelling rivalries as teams battle for crucial championship points.
