The United States military says it has carried out a “heavy wave” of retaliatory strikes against Iran, targeting dozens of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) sites after Tehran attempted ballistic missile attacks on American forces earlier this week. The strikes mark one of the most forceful US responses since tensions reignited in June.
Centcom confirmed the operation, saying the targets were linked to Iran’s attacks on US bases in Jordan and on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz one of the world’s most critical shipping lanes.
Iranian state media reported casualties from the latest bombardment, claiming three people, including a two‑year‑old child, were killed on Qeshm Island. Additional strikes were reported across southern and western Iran, deepening fears of a widening confrontation.
This week has already seen a dramatic escalation. For the first time, the US and Saudi Arabia publicly acknowledged conducting joint strikes against Iranian proxy forces in Iraq, signalling a new phase in the conflict.
Since a fragile ceasefire collapsed in June, Iran and the US have exchanged a series of strikes and counter‑strikes: Washington has blockaded Iranian ports and bombed strategic sites, while Tehran has launched missiles and drones at US positions across the Middle East and targeted shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
Amid the intensifying hostilities, Axios reported that President Donald Trump met Saudi defence minister Prince Khalid bin Salman, who conveyed Riyadh’s desire to de‑escalate tensions. The White House has been contacted for comment.
The region now stands on a knife‑edge, with both nations trading blows while allies urge restraint and civilians caught in the crossfire.
