Trump Says He Will Speak With Putin Over Reported Plague Incident in Russia

4 min read

US President Donald Trump has said he plans to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin “very soon” regarding reports surrounding the death of a laboratory technician allegedly linked to a plague-related incident in Russia, as Washington increases pressure on Moscow to provide more information.

The reported incident reportedly took place at an anti-plague research institute in Russia’s Irkutsk region, prompting international attention and calls for transparency. However, Russian authorities have downplayed the reports and denied claims that special anti-plague measures were being implemented following the incident.

Speaking at the White House on Tuesday, Trump confirmed that a conversation with Putin was scheduled and indicated that the matter would be discussed directly between the two leaders.

“I have a call scheduled, yes,” Trump told reporters when asked whether he had spoken with Putin about the issue, adding that the discussion would take place “very soon.”

The United States has expressed growing concern over the lack of publicly available information regarding the reported death and the circumstances surrounding it.

During a visit to Iceland, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio urged Russia to be transparent and share details with the international community.

“We encourage Russia to be transparent and share more information with the world so that all of us could react accordingly and appropriately,” Rubio said.

“Depending on what we learn about it, we would learn how to respond.”

The comments reflect concerns among US officials that a lack of information could hamper international public health monitoring and emergency preparedness efforts.

According to reports, the Wall Street Journal said the US State Department had sent Russia a confidential diplomatic message, known as a demarche, warning that failure to disclose relevant details could conflict with international health obligations and transparency standards.

Russian officials have maintained that there is no cause for alarm and have disputed suggestions that the situation poses a wider public health threat. Authorities have also rejected reports indicating that emergency anti-plague containment measures were introduced following the incident.

The plague, caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis, remains rare but continues to exist in isolated regions around the world. Modern cases are generally treatable with antibiotics when detected early, though outbreaks are closely monitored by health authorities due to the disease’s historical significance and potential public health implications.

The reported incident has added another point of tension to an already complex relationship between Washington and Moscow. Analysts say the issue now extends beyond public health and has become a broader diplomatic matter involving transparency, international cooperation, and information sharing.

As international attention grows, observers will be watching closely for the outcome of the expected conversation between Trump and Putin, as well as any additional information released by Russian authorities regarding the reported laboratory incident.
