Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has warned that any attempt to create instability or anarchy by exploiting challenges inherited from the previous administration will be met with strict action under the country’s existing laws.
Speaking at a discussion held at the Krishibid Institution Bangladesh (KIB) auditorium in Dhaka on Saturday evening, marking the 48th founding anniversary of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), the prime minister said his government remains committed to strengthening democracy while maintaining law and order across the country. The event was presided over by BNP Acting Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed.
Tarique Rahman said the government is working to build a humane state and establish a sustainable democratic system where citizens enjoy the freedom to express their views. However, he alleged that certain individuals and political groups are attempting to exploit unresolved issues left behind by the previous government to create confusion and unrest.
Referring to what he described as 16 years of authoritarian rule, the prime minister said a political party had been forced underground during that period. He stressed that the current administration had been entrusted by the people with the responsibility of governing the country and would continue to uphold democratic values and institutional practices.
“I want to make it clear to those who seek to spread confusion and create anarchy that the people of the country have entrusted this government with the responsibility of running the country. We will uphold democratic norms and practices,” Tarique Rahman said.
At the same time, he cautioned that the government would not tolerate efforts to destabilize the country. He emphasized that Bangladesh’s legal framework provides mechanisms to deal with attempts to create disorder and urged all political actors and citizens to operate within the bounds of the law.
The prime minister also acknowledged the country’s ongoing fuel shortages and electricity supply challenges, noting that his administration had inherited a fragile economy and an energy sector facing significant difficulties. He said the government remains focused on addressing these issues while ensuring stability and protecting democratic progress.
His remarks come at a time when the government faces mounting economic and energy-related pressures, alongside efforts to strengthen governance and maintain public confidence in the country’s democratic institutions.
