Russian authorities have launched a criminal investigation on terrorism charges following a large-scale Ukrainian drone attack on an industrial facility in the Nizhny Novgorod region, as hostilities between Russia and Ukraine continue to escalate.
According to Russian state media, investigators opened the case after a massive overnight drone assault caused significant damage to an unnamed industrial site. Regional Governor Gleb Nikitin said the facility suffered substantial damage but reported no casualties.
Ukrainian media outlets claimed the target was the Kstovo Oil Refinery, describing it as one of Russia’s largest refining facilities responsible for producing fuel and lubricants. Local authorities said emergency measures had been implemented to ensure fuel supplies remained available at petrol stations and to minimise disruptions.
The latest attack comes amid an intensifying exchange of long-range strikes between the two countries.
Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands of households across Ukraine were left without electricity after Russia launched overnight attacks on critical energy infrastructure in four Ukrainian regions.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia had significantly increased the intensity of its attacks, placing additional pressure on Ukraine’s air defence capabilities.
“The intensity of the strikes is very high, and the Russians are seeking to maximally exploit the deficit of ballistic missile interceptors,” Zelenskyy said.
The Ukrainian leader also claimed Kyiv had successfully struck the Kamensky Plant in Russia’s **Rostov region, a facility he said was involved in the production of Russian missiles.
Russia’s Defence Ministry reported that its forces intercepted and destroyed 235 Ukrainian drones across multiple regions overnight, underscoring the increasing scale of drone warfare in the conflict.
At the same time, Ukraine’s Air Force said it had shot down 371 of 433 long-range drones launched by Russian forces since Saturday evening, highlighting the intense aerial battle taking place above both countries.
The renewed wave of attacks demonstrates the growing importance of drone technology in the war, with both Moscow and Kyiv increasingly targeting energy, industrial, and military infrastructure far from the frontline.
As the conflict enters another critical phase, both nations continue to exchange strikes deep inside each other’s territory, raising concerns about further damage to vital infrastructure and civilian services.
