Prince William’s three children are growing up in the shadow of one of the most public and painful royal rifts in modern history and royal experts say they are now old enough to understand that something is deeply wrong between their father and Prince Harry.
Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams told the Daily Express that Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis would “undoubtedly be aware” of the fractured relationship between the brothers, who reportedly have not spoken in more than three years. He noted that while the children were very young when Harry and Meghan stepped back from royal duties in 2020, they are now old enough to have formed their own impressions of the ongoing tensions.
Fitzwilliams suggested that the subject of “Uncle Harry” may be one the children avoid raising directly, as young people often sense when certain topics are too sensitive to mention. Yet he also believes they likely carry warm memories of Harry, who has long been known for his natural ease with children during public engagements.
Meanwhile, sources close to the Sussexes say Prince Harry is painfully aware that his own children Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet are growing up without the extended family network their cousins enjoy. One insider said Harry feels “sad” that Archie and Lilibet are missing out on the kind of family connections that once defined his own childhood. King Charles III, who has had limited contact with the children since the Sussexes moved to California, is reportedly eager to rebuild those bonds.
Tensions between the brothers have reportedly intensified in recent months. Harry’s public comments expressing concern that his niece and nephew might “play second fiddle” to Prince George are said to have infuriated William, who is fiercely protective of his wife and children. Additional reports claim Harry and Meghan have complained privately about their children not receiving the same advantages as their cousins remarks that have further aggravated the Prince of Wales.
As the rift shows no sign of healing, the next generation of royals is growing up amid a family divide that continues to shape the monarchy’s public image and its private heartache.
