Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is set to inaugurate several development initiatives worth Tk1,542.16 crore during his upcoming visit to Feni, including the long-awaited Phase I rehabilitation of the Muhuri-Kahua Flood Control, Drainage and Irrigation Project in Parshuram upazila.
The prime minister’s visit, originally scheduled for September 17, was postponed and has now been rescheduled for October 1.
The project received approval from the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) on June 16 at an estimated cost of Tk1,542.16 crore. The initiative is aimed at improving flood management, irrigation facilities, and water resource infrastructure in the region.
Under the project, authorities will undertake extensive re-excavation of rivers and water bodies, rehabilitation of flood-control embankments, protection of vulnerable riverbanks, and renovation of existing irrigation infrastructure.
State Minister for Water Resources Forhad Hossain Azad visited Feni on Monday to review preparations ahead of the prime minister’s arrival. During the inspection, he visited Kheyaghat, areas along the Muhuri River, and the venue designated for the public rally in Parshuram.
According to the district administration, the prime minister will officially inaugurate the project at the Ghata Ghar area on the bank of the Muhuri River before addressing a public gathering.
Following the inauguration ceremony, Tarique Rahman is scheduled to travel to Fulgazi, where he will participate in several programmes, including a tree-planting initiative at Khaleda Zia Women’s College.
He will also inaugurate solar power systems with a combined generation capacity of 962.5 kilowatts installed at government offices in Parshuram, Fulgazi, and Chhagalnaiya upazilas as part of efforts to promote renewable energy use in public institutions.
The prime minister is expected to rest and offer prayers at the Fulgazi District Council Dak Bungalow before attending another programme at Fulgazi Government Pilot High School between 3:00pm and 3:20pm.
Extensive security arrangements have been put in place for the visit. Authorities have divided the venues into red, yellow, and white security zones, while more than 2,000 police personnel will be deployed across Parshuram and Fulgazi to ensure public safety and maintain order throughout the day’s events.
The visit is expected to highlight the government’s focus on flood protection, irrigation modernisation, renewable energy development, and regional infrastructure improvements in Feni and surrounding areas.
