Bangladesh’s hopes of reaching the final of the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup came to an end after a narrow 1-0 defeat to Singapore in Jakarta on Monday.
The loss leaves the Red and Green side without a point from their first two Group A matches, following their 3-0 defeat to Malaysia in the tournament opener. As a result, Bangladesh can no longer qualify for the final.
Despite the disappointing outcome, Bangladesh delivered a much-improved performance compared to their opening match. Under coach Thomas Dooley, the team appeared more organized, disciplined, and competitive, creating opportunities and showing greater determination throughout the contest.
Singapore scored the decisive goal in the 35th minute, when Harhys Stewart headed home from close range after receiving a cross from Nur Adam Abdullah.
Bangladesh responded positively after the break and pushed forward in search of an equalizer. The side showed more attacking intent and managed to create chances, but Singapore’s defense remained solid and denied them a breakthrough.
The defeat officially ends Bangladesh’s hopes of advancing to the competition’s final, leaving the team to play for pride in their remaining group-stage fixture.
Bangladesh will now face hosts Indonesia in their final Group A match on Thursday at 6:30pm Bangladesh time. While progression is no longer possible, the match will provide an opportunity for the team to finish the tournament on a positive note and build confidence for future competitions.
Coach Thomas Dooley and his players will likely take encouragement from the noticeable improvement shown against Singapore despite the result, as Bangladesh continues its efforts to develop and compete more effectively on the international stage.
