PM Calls for Unity as Tarique Rahman Questions 17 Years of Delayed Development in Cox’s Bazar

Bangladesh’s premier has urged citizens to stand together in building a stronger nation, saying meaningful progress “cannot be achieved by the government alone.” Addressing a civic gathering at the Long Beach Hotel in Cox’s Bazar, he stressed that national development requires collective effort and shared responsibility.

BNP chairperson Tarique Rahman echoed the sentiment, calling on residents to help transform Cox’s Bazar into a clean, modern coastal city worthy of its global reputation.

He said the iconic signboard declaring the world’s longest sandy beach should reflect reality and that only united action can make that happen.

Rahman questioned why Cox’s Bazar had seen so little development over the past 17 years, noting that during his four‑and‑a‑half‑month tour across the country, he repeatedly encountered projects that “should have been completed long ago.” He said Bangladesh must now catch up on years of stalled progress if it hopes to change people’s lives for the better.

The prime minister highlighted major upcoming initiatives, including upgrading Cox’s Bazar Airport into an international hub and establishing a marine university to boost education, tourism and regional connectivity. Senior ministers, MPs and BNP leaders attended the event, along with Dr Zubaida Rahman and Hasina Ahmed.

Later in the evening, the prime minister personally drove along Marine Drive to inspect the coastal stretch and review development needs.
