A massive blaze tore through a luxury beachfront resort in the Dominican Republic on Friday, almost completely destroying the property and forcing the urgent evacuation of nearly 1,700 tourists, authorities confirmed.

Local media reported that an Italian tourist died in the fire, while several others required medical treatment as the flames spread rapidly through the Viva Dominicus Beach by Wyndham resort in Bayahibe a major hotspot for US and international travellers on the country’s southeastern coast.

Officials said approximately 1,690 guests were relocated to nearby hotels and temporary housing as firefighters battled the inferno. The country’s Emergency Operations Center noted that strong winds and the resort’s thatch‑roof structures contributed to the speed and intensity of the blaze.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Authorities added that Viva Wyndham’s neighbouring property, the Dominicus Palace, escaped damage and continues to operate normally.

The destruction of one of the region’s most popular resorts has sent shockwaves through the tourism sector, with officials now assessing the full extent of the damage and the next steps for displaced guests.
