King Charles Praises US‑UK Alliance at White House State Dinner as Leaders Highlight Global Challenges

2 min read

King Charles used a White House state dinner to underscore the importance of the United Kingdom’s alliance with the United States, calling partnerships essential in an increasingly “contested world.” His remarks came during a high‑profile evening attended by prominent figures from both sides of the Atlantic.

President Donald Trump, in his toast, described the relationship between the two nations as a “friendship unlike any other.” He also said the King “agrees” with him that Iran must not be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon.

In a lighter moment, the King joked with the president, saying, “If it wasn’t for us, you’d be speaking French,” drawing laughter from the room. He also presented Trump with a symbolic gift a bell from HMS Trump, a World War II submarine.

The dinner featured a guest list filled with political leaders, cultural figures and diplomats, along with a menu designed to showcase both nations’ culinary traditions.

Earlier in the day, King Charles addressed a joint session of Congress, urging lawmakers to resist “clarion calls to become ever more inward‑looking.” His speech blended British humour with historical reflection and a forward‑looking message about shared global responsibilities. Lawmakers responded with frequent applause and standing ovations.

He closed by noting that “America’s words carry weight and meaning,” a line that prompted murmurs of both agreement and concern among some in the chamber, according to North America correspondent Anthony Zurcher.
