Israel secretly constructed a remote military base in Iraq’s western desert to support potential strikes against Iran, according to a report published by The Wall Street Journal. The base was allegedly established weeks before the 28 February attack, serving as a covert logistics hub for the Israeli Air Force.
Local Iraqi media initially reported that an Iraqi soldier had been killed in the desert region, but later accounts revealed a different picture. A shepherd reportedly alerted authorities after hearing helicopter activity and gunfire. When Iraqi forces attempted to reach the area, Israel allegedly took steps to block their access and succeeded.
The report claims that members of Israel’s special forces were stationed at the hidden base, accompanied by rescue teams tasked with retrieving pilots in the event an Israeli aircraft was shot down during operations against Iran.
In early March, Iraqi troops discovered the desert installation and attempted to advance toward it. According to local outlets, Israel responded with an airstrike that killed one Iraqi soldier. The Iraqi government publicly blamed the United States at the time, accusing American forces of acting without coordination. Subsequent reporting, however, suggests the incident was tied to Israel’s covert preparations.
The revelations add a new layer of complexity to regional tensions, highlighting how Iraq’s territory has become entangled in the shadow conflict between Israel and Iran.
