A Dhaka court on Thursday placed Indian national Rabiul Islam on a fresh three-day remand in connection with a case filed by Uttara West Police Station over allegations of espionage and activities linked to the collection of sensitive information.
The order was issued by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Hasib Ullah Piash after the investigation officer, Inspector Md Nur Alam of the Ramna Detective Branch, sought a seven-day remand for further questioning.
Confirming the development, state prosecutor Shamsuddoha Sumon said Rabiul has now been remanded for a total of 18 days across four phases since his arrest.
According to police, Rabiul was detained from a residence on Road 13, Sector 11, Uttara West, on September 23 following information regarding his alleged involvement in suspicious activities and a cognisable offence in Bangladesh.
After being taken into custody, he was arrested under Section 54 of the Code of Criminal Procedure and subsequently remanded on multiple occasions for interrogation. Investigators later filed a formal case against him under the Official Secrets Act, 1923, based on evidence allegedly collected during the earlier remand periods.
According to case documents submitted to the court, investigators found that Rabiul had entered Bangladesh more than 15 times using tourist and business visas. Police claim he failed to provide a satisfactory explanation for the frequency of his visits.
Authorities further alleged that the accused attempted to collect and transmit photographs of important government infrastructure, restricted areas, and sensitive government documents to foreign intelligence agencies.
Investigators say the ongoing remand is necessary to verify the allegations, identify possible contacts or associates, and examine any additional evidence related to the case.
The court granted three days of remand instead of the seven days requested by the investigation officer.
The case remains under investigation, and no verdict has been reached regarding the allegations. Authorities are continuing to examine evidence and gather information related to the accusations brought against the accused.
