A businessman was injured and a former Jubo Dal leader was detained after an altercation in Dhaka’s Banglamotor area on Wednesday night that allegedly involved an assault with a firearm and the firing of blank shots.
According to police and eyewitness accounts, trader Sohan, 45, suffered a head injury after Ferdous Ahammed Saimon, a former leader of Jubo Dal’s Hatirjheel Police Station unit, allegedly struck him with the butt of a pistol during a confrontation.
The blow reportedly caused bleeding, and Sohan was later taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he received first aid treatment.
Witnesses said the incident occurred around 8:00pm, when a group led by Ferdous allegedly intercepted Sohan while he was walking near Banglamotor. An argument reportedly broke out between the two sides before the situation escalated.
According to those present, Ferdous allegedly struck Sohan on the head with the firearm, causing visible injuries. As nearby residents gathered after hearing the disturbance, Ferdous allegedly fired two blank rounds from the weapon.
Despite the gunfire, local residents continued to confront the group. Witnesses said Ferdous and several associates then sought shelter inside a nearby building as an angry crowd gathered outside.
Videos shared on social media showed residents staging a protest in a nearby alley, condemning what they described as extortion and criminal activities allegedly linked to Ferdous in the area.
During the unrest, locals also set fire to a motorcycle said to belong to Ferdous.
Police, including Deputy Commissioner Ibn Mizan, responded to the scene and worked to bring the situation under control. Officers subsequently entered the building, detained Ferdous and two associates, and took them into custody for questioning.
Residents alleged that Ferdous had been involved in extortion activities in the area for an extended period and that he and his associates often intimidated or attacked those who refused to comply with demands.
Sajjadul Miraz, joint general secretary of the central committee of Jubo Dal, said Ferdous had already been expelled from the organisation over allegations related to intimidation and extortion. Jubo Dal is the youth wing affiliated with the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
Police have not yet announced whether formal charges will be filed, and investigations into the incident remain ongoing.
