Goodstart Early Learning had announced plans to close its Darlinghurst service on 26 November, citing high operating costs and a “significant loss” despite strong occupancy. The not‑for‑profit rents the multi‑level site from the City of Sydney, and said the building layout required additional staffing to safely supervise children.
The provider also said the federal government rejected its request to raise daily fees beyond the current $175 cap, limiting its ability to offset rising costs.
In response to community backlash, the City of Sydney has offered the centre 12 months of free rent while long‑term options are explored.
Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the move was intended to stabilise the situation:
“I hope this gives comfort and certainty to parents that we are committed to ensuring stability and the learning community they have built in Darlo.”
Goodstart, which leases three other sites from the City of Sydney, has not yet confirmed whether it will accept the rent‑free offer but for now, parents say the reprieve gives them room to breathe.
