Officials of Dhaka Customs House have seized 4.5 kilograms of 24-carat gold bars worth an estimated Tk8 crore from a Malaysian passenger at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.
The operation was carried out early Sunday based on information provided by an intelligence agency. The passenger, identified as Yang Don Sew, 43, a Malaysian citizen holding passport number A61828082, arrived in Dhaka from Kuala Lumpur on Malaysia Airlines flight MH-0196.
According to customs officials, the passenger was placed under surveillance immediately after disembarking from the aircraft. After collecting his luggage, he was stopped by customs officers while crossing Green Channel-1, where passengers with nothing to declare are permitted to exit.
The search was conducted in the presence of intelligence agency representatives, leading to the recovery of the gold bars at approximately 1:45am.
Authorities said the seizure consisted of nine gold bars, including four bars weighing 1 kilogram each and five bars weighing 100 grams each, bringing the total weight to 4.5 kilograms.
The gold was allegedly concealed beneath the passenger’s shirt and secured with a black cloth belt in an unusual manner to avoid detection. Customs officials confirmed that the bars were made of 24-carat gold and had an estimated market value of around Tk8 crore.
Investigators said the passenger failed to make any declaration regarding the gold and was unable to produce documents required under the Customs Act 2023 and the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act 1947.
As a result, the gold has been temporarily confiscated under Section 191 of the Customs Act 2023, pending completion of legal proceedings.
Customs authorities also confirmed that preparations are underway to file a criminal case against the accused passenger at the airport police station under relevant laws.Authorities said the seizure consisted of nine gold bars, including four bars weighing 1 kilogram each and five bars weighing 100 grams each, bringing the total weight to 4.5 kilograms.
