A powerful explosion at a residential building in Monaco has left three people seriously injured and sent shockwaves through the wealthy Mediterranean principality. Authorities say the attacker fled on foot into France moments after the blast, prompting a cross‑border manhunt by French and Monaco security forces.
The attack unfolded around 9 p.m. on Monday near the French border, injuring two adults and a child who were rushed to hospitals in France. Monaco’s Minister of State Christophe Mirmand said the device detonated at the entryway of a private residence, describing the incident as “unusual” and deeply alarming for the normally tranquil enclave.
Prince Albert II condemned the explosion as “an odious act,” adding that all national services had been mobilised to ensure public safety. Surveillance footage from Monaco and the neighbouring French town of Beausoleil helped authorities identify the suspect, who remains at large.
French police confirmed they are assisting in the search but declined to provide further details. The motive behind the attack is still under investigation.
French broadcaster BFM and Ukrainian outlet Ukrainska Pravda reported that one of the injured is Ukrainian construction magnate Vadym Iermolaiev, who was sanctioned by Ukraine in 2023 over alleged ties to Russia. Neither French nor Monaco officials have publicly confirmed the identities of the victims.
Emergency crews continued to secure the area late into the night as investigators combed through debris for clues. The attack has rattled residents of Monaco, where violent incidents are exceedingly rare, and raised urgent questions about the suspect’s intentions and possible international links.
