Bangladesh’s preparations for their two‑Test tour of Australia have suffered a significant setback, with rising fast‑bowling star Nahid Rana officially ruled out due to a Grade 2 side strain. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) confirmed the news on Saturday, ending hopes that the 23‑year‑old could recover in time for the high‑profile series.
Rana sustained the injury during the second T20 International against Zimbabwe on July 17, and subsequent scans revealed the full extent of the damage. According to the BCB’s medical update, he will require four weeks of tissue healing, followed by two to four weeks of bowling workload progression placing him well outside the window for selection.
The loss is a heavy one for Bangladesh, with Rana emerging as one of the team’s most exciting fast‑bowling prospects in recent months. His absence leaves a noticeable gap in the pace attack at a time when Bangladesh is striving to build depth and consistency in Test cricket.
There was, however, a glimmer of good news for the touring squad. Left‑arm pacer Shoriful Islam is progressing well in his rehabilitation after suffering a Grade 1 hamstring injury during the Zimbabwe series. The BCB says Shoriful is expected to resume bowling from July 29, with a fitness assessment scheduled for August 12.
While Shoriful is unlikely to be available for the opening Test in Darwin, he remains a strong contender for the second Test in Mackay pending medical clearance.
Bangladesh now faces the challenge of reshaping its pace unit ahead of a demanding Australian tour, with selectors forced to rethink their strategy in the wake of Rana’s untimely injury.
