Massimiliano Allegri has put an end to weeks of speculation by making it clear he is not interested in becoming the next coach of the Italy national team. Instead, the 58‑year‑old says he intends to continue his work at AC Milan, where he is currently in charge.
The rumours began after Gennaro Gattuso resigned following Italy’s failure to qualify for a third consecutive World Cup, prompting Allegri and Napoli coach Antonio Conte to be floated as potential successors. But speaking to reporters ahead of Milan’s Serie A match against Verona, Allegri dismissed the idea, saying: “My career speaks for itself changing jobs often isn’t part of my DNA.”
Allegri first coached Milan from 2010 to 2014, then enjoyed a highly successful five‑year spell at Juventus before returning there in 2021. He was dismissed three years later and rejoined Milan last summer, where he now has the team in the top three and pushing for Champions League qualification.
He emphasised that he prefers working within a club structure and building long‑term progress: “I like working in a club that is managed as a business… We can’t win the Champions League in two years, but you need ambition.”
For now, Allegri says his focus remains firmly on Milan and he intends to stay right where he is.
