Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says the deep friendship between Australia and New Zealand will be crucial as both nations confront an increasingly unstable global environment.
Speaking alongside New Zealand’s leadership, Mr Albanese reflected on the shifting geopolitical landscape, noting that many of the long‑standing assumptions that once underpinned global trade and international cooperation have eroded.
“We’re living in a world which is really volatile, where there is a great deal of turbulence and some of the old certainties that commanded global trade and global activity have disappeared,” he said.
Neither leader directly mentioned China, though concerns about Beijing’s expanding influence in the Pacific continue to shape regional diplomacy. Both countries have also felt the economic impact of the trade war triggered by US President Donald Trump, which has disrupted markets and supply chains across the region.
Mr Albanese emphasised that collaboration across business, trade and defence remains essential as Australia and New Zealand navigate these pressures together. He said the trans‑Tasman partnership long built on trust, shared values and mutual support is more important than ever in maintaining stability and resilience.
