Australia Storm Into Rugby League World Cup Final as Walsh Shines Against Samoa

2 min read

Australia produced their most convincing performance of the Rugby League World Cup campaign to defeat Samoa and book a place in the tournament final, overcoming a spirited challenge from a passionate Samoan side in front of a sold-out crowd at Sydney Football Stadium.

The atmosphere was electric as Samoa fans packed the venue and watched their team make an encouraging start. Samoa opened the scoring with a penalty goal and briefly threatened to upset the defending champions.

However, the match quickly swung in Australia’s favour. The Kangaroos capitalised on a series of mistakes and disciplinary problems from Samoa, who were further hampered when prop Spencer Leniu was reduced to the sidelines following dissent towards referee Adam Gee.

Australia’s attack finally clicked after a sluggish start to the tournament, with Tom Dearden scoring the opening try through a clever scrum play that used Reece Walsh as a decoy before cutting through the defence.

That breakthrough triggered a dominant spell from the Kangaroos, who repeatedly punished Samoa’s errors and raced into a commanding position.

The dangerous combination of Cameron Munster and Reece Walsh proved too much for Samoa to handle, with their creativity, footwork, and ball-playing skills helping Australia establish a 26-2 halftime lead.

Samoa attempted a second-half comeback through tries from Stephen Crichton and Izack Tago, but the challenge never seriously threatened Australia’s control of the contest.

Walsh continued his outstanding performance by completing a hat-trick, while Jack Bostock added a late try to seal a comfortable victory and secure Australia’s place in the World Cup final.

Earlier in the day, the Jillaroos overcame a spirited challenge from Fiji Bulikula, recovering from an early deficit to claim a 30-14 victory and set up a fifth consecutive Women’s Rugby League World Cup final against New Zealand.

The Rugby League World Cup finals will now take place at Lang Park, Brisbane, with the women’s final scheduled for 4:10pm AEDT and the men’s final at 7:35pm AEDT next Sunday.
