Six Killed in Krakow Shooting as Polish Authorities Probe Suspected Far-Right Attack

At least six people were killed and several others injured after a gunman opened fire in central Krakow, Poland’s second-largest city, in an attack that has shocked the nation and triggered a major counter-terrorism investigation.

The shooting unfolded on Saturday afternoon in Krakow’s Main Market Square, one of the city’s busiest tourist destinations. According to Polish authorities, the suspect drove into the area before opening fire on members of the public.

Videos circulating on social media and verified by media organisations reportedly show scenes of panic as people rushed into nearby buildings for safety while gunshots echoed through the historic city centre. One video also captures a black vehicle moving through the square moments before police arrived at the scene.

Authorities said a passing tram was struck during the shooting, with windows shattered by gunfire. No passengers on board were reported injured.

Armed police officers responded within minutes and engaged the suspect in a gun battle. Officials said the rapid intervention prevented what could have been an even deadlier attack.

The suspected gunman, identified as a 25-year-old Polish citizen, was wounded during the confrontation and remains in hospital following surgery. Polish Interior Ministry officials said investigators believe the suspect was influenced by far-right extremist ideologies and used what authorities described as military-style weapons during the assault.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk later confirmed that police discovered three additional bodies at the suspect’s residence during a subsequent search, bringing the total confirmed death toll to six. Investigations at the property are continuing.

The National Public Prosecutor’s Office has launched an investigation into what prosecutors have described as a suspected terrorist offence, while law enforcement agencies continue examining the suspect’s background, motives, and any possible connections to extremist networks.

The attack has prompted a nationwide security response and renewed concerns about political extremism and public safety in Poland.
