The newly formed Parliamentary Caucus on Child Rights held its maiden meeting at the **Parliament Building on Thursday, marking a significant step towards strengthening child protection and advancing children’s rights in Bangladesh.
The meeting focused on a range of key issues, including ensuring child safety, developing child-friendly laws and policies, allocating adequate resources for child welfare programmes, and enhancing the role of Members of Parliament in fulfilling both national and international commitments relating to children’s rights.
Participants discussed the importance of reviewing existing child rights legislation as well as proposed legal frameworks to ensure that laws effectively respond to the evolving needs of children. It was noted that necessary reforms and amendments could be pursued either through the Ministry of Law or introduced directly by lawmakers through private members’ bills.
Officials at the meeting reaffirmed the Parliament’s commitment to supporting initiatives aimed at safeguarding children and strengthening legal and institutional protections.
Welcoming the establishment of the caucus, speakers described it as an important milestone in promoting children’s rights and creating a stronger framework for child protection across the country.
The meeting also highlighted the need for active collaboration among Members of Parliament, development partners, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders to ensure the initiative achieves meaningful and lasting outcomes.
Participants expressed optimism that the caucus would serve as an effective platform for advancing policies, legislation, and advocacy efforts that place the well-being, safety, education, and development of children at the centre of national priorities.
