Surfing Bodies Suspend Competitor as French Polynesia Police Investigate Allegations

2 min read

Police in French Polynesia are gathering evidence following an alleged incident in Tahiti that has prompted two of the world’s leading surfing organisations to suspend a professional surfer from competition.

Both the International Surfing Association (ISA) and the World Surf League (WSL) announced this week that a male competitor had been suspended after they became aware of what they described as serious allegations.

Neither organisation has publicly identified the athlete involved, and the allegations have not been independently verified.

The WSL stated that the alleged incident occurred during a private gathering in Tahiti in August and was not associated with any official event or activity organised by the league.

According to reports, the incident is alleged to have taken place following the final day of the Outerknown Tahiti Pro, one of the sport’s premier international competitions.

Media reports have claimed the allegations involve a teenage Australian female surfer and several adult males. Authorities have not publicly confirmed those details.

In a statement, surfing authorities indicated that the suspension was implemented while investigations continue and pending the outcome of any legal proceedings.

Police in French Polynesia are currently collecting evidence and examining the matter. Reports have also suggested that NSW Police in Australia have been informed of the allegations and have had contact with surfing authorities regarding the case.

The ISA and WSL both emphasised their commitment to athlete welfare, safeguarding, and maintaining a safe environment within the sport.

At this stage, no criminal charges have been publicly announced, and the matter remains under investigation.

The case has attracted significant attention within the surfing community as governing bodies continue to monitor developments and cooperate with relevant authorities.
