Fremantle climbed into the AFLW top eight with an impressive win over Adelaide, while Collingwood secured its first victory of the season during an action-packed round of AFLW action on Sunday.
The Dockers produced a dominant opening quarter at Unley Oval, keeping Adelaide scoreless while piling on 28 points to set up a commanding 9.6 (60) to 5.5 (35) victory. Fremantle’s fast start proved decisive, with the visitors leading by as much as 45 points before Adelaide attempted a late fightback.
Adelaide managed three consecutive goals either side of three-quarter time and briefly reduced the margin, but never got closer than 25 points. The win improved Fremantle’s record to 4-3, while Adelaide fell to 3-4 for the season.
The result was particularly significant for the Dockers, who recorded their first AFLW victory over Adelaide in seven meetings. Prior to Sunday’s clash, the Crows had dominated the fixture with a 9-1 record.
Meanwhile, Collingwood broke through for its first win of the campaign, overcoming Greater Western Sydney in a low-scoring contest at Victoria Park.
The Magpies prevailed 4.10 (34) to 3.7 (25) after trailing at every break. GWS held narrow leads of one, four and seven points at the end of the first three quarters, but Collingwood dominated the final term to secure the breakthrough victory.
Collingwood finished with 18 more inside-50 entries and 16 more contested possessions, reflecting their stronger second-half performance. The win moved the Magpies to 1-6, while the Giants also slipped to 1-6.
In Sydney, the Swans strengthened their position in the top four with a 5.7 (37) to 3.5 (23) win over Brisbane.
The Lions remained within striking distance throughout most of the match and entered the final quarter just one point behind. However, an early goal from Cynthia Hamilton helped Sydney take control before the home side ran out comfortable 12-point winners.
The result leaves Sydney firmly in finals contention while Brisbane’s season record dropped to 2-5.
In the final game of Round 7, Gold Coast produced a strong second-half performance to defeat St Kilda 10.9 (69) to 6.3 (39).
The Saints led by 15 points at half-time but were overwhelmed after the break, conceding eight goals to one as the Suns surged home. The victory lifted Gold Coast to sixth place on the AFLW ladder, while St Kilda moved closer to the bottom of the standings.
With Round 7 now complete, Fremantle’s rise into the top eight and Collingwood’s long-awaited first win were among the major talking points as the AFLW finals race continues to take shape.
