27 Killed in Two Mass Shootings in South Africa Within Hours

At least 27 people have been killed in two separate mass shootings in South Africa, underscoring ongoing concerns about violent crime and gun-related attacks in the country.

The deadliest incident occurred on Saturday evening near Johannesburg, where police said eight gunmen stormed a bar and opened fire on patrons. Authorities reported that 17 people were killed, including 13 men and four women, while another 15 people were injured.

According to police, the attackers initially shot at people outside the venue before continuing the assault inside the bar. The gunmen also set fire to two vehicles before fleeing the scene.

Deputy provincial police commissioner Maj Gen Fred Kekana said investigators are examining whether the attack may have been linked to a previous incident that occurred last month, in which one person was killed and another injured. Police said they have obtained images of suspects and have identified some individuals believed to be involved.

Just hours later, a second mass shooting occurred in a township near Cape Town during the early hours of Sunday morning. Police reported that 10 people were killed outside an entertainment venue, while 11 others were injured.

Five victims died at the scene, and another five later died in hospital as a result of their injuries. Authorities have not yet announced a motive for the attack.

As of Sunday, no arrests had been made in connection with either shooting, and investigations remain ongoing.

The latest incidents add to a series of deadly shootings that have raised concerns about public safety in South Africa. The country continues to struggle with high levels of violent crime and gang-related gun violence, particularly in some urban and township communities.

The attacks come only days after another mass shooting in Durban, where 11 people were killed when armed attackers stormed a house in the KwaMakhutha township.

Law enforcement agencies have pledged to continue investigations into both shootings and are appealing for information that could help identify and locate those responsible.
