Bangladesh and India are reportedly exploring the possibility of a visit by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to India during the third week of November, according to sources familiar with the matter. Discussions on rescheduling the trip come after an earlier attempt to arrange the visit did not proceed.
Efforts to finalize a new date are expected to gain momentum following the arrival of Bangladesh’s newly appointed High Commissioner to India, Asad Alam Siam, who is expected to take up his post in late October or early November.
According to reports, one of the key issues influencing the prospects of the visit is the unresolved matter concerning the extradition request related to former prime minister Sheikh Hasina. The issue remains under discussion between the two countries and is viewed by observers as an important factor in bilateral engagement.
Recent exchanges of birthday greetings between Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have been seen by some analysts as a positive diplomatic signal that could help facilitate further dialogue between the two neighboring countries.
Reports have also circulated regarding an alleged visit to Dhaka by Indian National Security Adviser Ajit Doval on September 17. However, neither the Government of Bangladesh nor the Government of India has publicly confirmed or denied those reports.
Bangladesh and India maintain extensive cooperation across a range of areas, including trade, connectivity, security, energy, and regional development.
