South Africa Investigates Ninth Woman’s Death Amid Growing Concerns Over Unexplained Killings

South African police have confirmed the discovery of a ninth woman’s body in two months in the Ekurhuleni region east of Johannesburg, intensifying concerns about a series of unexplained deaths that have alarmed local communities.

The latest victim was found on Thursday morning in Dawn Park, where authorities said her body was discovered partially clothed and wrapped in a sheet beside a roadway. Police have not yet released her identity as investigations continue.

The discovery follows the deaths of eight other women whose bodies have been found across Ekurhuleni since July. Several of the victims were reportedly discovered with injuries, and some were found partially clothed, prompting widespread public concern and calls for answers from authorities.

Despite similarities between some of the cases, police have stressed that investigators have not yet determined whether the deaths are connected or whether a single individual may be responsible. Authorities say inquiries remain ongoing and that each case is being examined carefully.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has publicly addressed the incidents, pledging that authorities will pursue all available leads and work to identify those responsible for the killings. He described the situation as one that has created fear and uncertainty within affected communities.

Among the victims was Elizabeth “Tsontso” Moselakgomo, a 38-year-old woman who disappeared after leaving home for an afternoon run. Her body was later found behind a hotel in Kempton Park. Other identified victims include Itumeleng Kekana, who had been missing since July, and Dineo Evelyn Motapane, whose body was discovered near a roadside in KwaThema.

Police noted that the first body linked to the recent cases was discovered in Kempton Park on July 15. A suspect was arrested shortly afterward in connection with that specific case and remains in custody. However, investigators have not publicly linked that individual to the other deaths under investigation.

The incidents have renewed attention on violence against women in South Africa and prompted community leaders and residents to call for increased safety measures and accelerated investigative efforts.

Authorities continue to appeal for information from the public as search and investigative teams work to determine whether the cases are connected and to identify those responsible.
