President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has emphasized the need for greater awareness among farmers and agricultural stakeholders to prevent the excessive and indiscriminate use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides in farming.
The remarks were made during a courtesy meeting with a delegation from Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU) at Bangabhaban on Tuesday. The delegation was led by SAU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Md Abdul Latif, who briefed the President on the university’s activities and academic initiatives.
During the meeting, the President highlighted concerns about the long-term impact of excessive chemical use on agriculture, the environment, and public health. He noted that improper application of fertilizers and pesticides can affect soil quality, reduce environmental sustainability, and create broader health risks over time.
He stressed the importance of increasing awareness among farmers and encouraging the responsible use of agricultural inputs to ensure sustainable food production and environmental protection.
The President also urged agricultural universities, research institutions, and relevant agencies to work together in educating farmers about modern and sustainable farming practices. He said coordinated efforts would help promote informed decision-making and reduce the risks associated with the unnecessary use of chemical products in agriculture.
Agricultural experts have long emphasized the importance of balanced fertilizer use, integrated pest management, and science-based farming methods to improve productivity while protecting natural resources.
The discussion also underscored the role of educational and research institutions in developing innovative solutions for the agricultural sector and supporting farmers through training, outreach, and technology transfer programs.
