State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Aninda Islam Amit told parliament on Wednesday that Bangladesh’s current electricity shortages should ease within the next 15 days, as government efforts continue to stabilise fuel supply and restore generation capacity. Responding to a supplementary question from opposition MP Md Nurul Islam (Chapainawabganj‑3), Amit acknowledged public suffering and said the government was not trying to “hide the actual situation behind mere words.” He attributed the crisis to past policy failures and the impact of the recent Middle East conflict, which has disrupted regional fuel markets.
Amit explained that gas‑fired power plants have a generation capacity of 12,000MW, requiring around 1,900mmcf of gas daily. Current supply from domestic production and imported LNG ranges between 2,300 and 2,700mmcf. Allocating all gas to power plants, he said, would severely disrupt supply to industries and households.
He noted that one of Bangladesh’s two floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs) went out of service on 21 July, taking 21-22 days to repair. “This caused a major disruption to the fuel supply system, which directly affected power generation,” he said.
Amit added that a 616MW unit at the Payra power plant is currently shut due to a technical fault, while another 616MW unit at the Matarbari power plant is undergoing maintenance further straining national generation capacity.
