Police have arrested a 31‑year‑old man over the violent attempted assassination of Sydney gangland figure Samimjan Azari, who survived a brazen shooting inside an Auburn kebab shop last year. Detectives from Taskforce Falcon and the Raptor Squad raided a home in Narwee around midday on Friday, taking the suspect into custody as part of their ongoing crackdown on underworld violence.
Azari, long targeted by rival factions after a split within the powerful Alameddine crime network, was shot in the shoulder during the 2025 attack. His associate Kali Taiseni, 25, was struck in the face and is expected to suffer permanent injuries. A 47‑year‑old shop worker was also wounded as chaos erupted inside the busy eatery.
The two masked gunmen fled immediately after the shooting, and police later found a burned‑out Audi in Greystanes, believed to be the getaway vehicle. The Auburn attack marked the fourth attempt on Azari’s life in just a few months, following near‑misses in Brighton‑Le‑Sands, a deadly Granville shooting that killed former Alameddine member Dawood Zakaria, and a failed ambush in Rosehill.
The Alameddine network, once a dominant force in Western Sydney’s criminal underworld, has fractured in recent years, with key figures fleeing to Lebanon. Taskforce Falcon was established after the Granville shooting to stem the escalating violence linked to the internal feud.
Police say investigations are continuing as they work to identify all individuals involved in the coordinated attempts to kill Azari.
