Kylian Mbappé will be eyeing more goals with Malaga visiting the Santiago Bernabéu, fresh off a superbly taken hat‑trick that reminded fans why he has twice won the league’s top‑scorer award. But despite the treble, manager José Mourinho says the forward must deliver more than just goals, calling him “incredible” while urging him to maintain his work‑rate.
“I prefer 40 goals with titles than 60 without titles,” Mourinho told reporters. “I prefer 40 with a lot of work for the team than 60 just playing for himself, as often happens with forwards.” He stressed this was not a criticism of Mbappé’s current form, but encouragement to keep pushing at the level he has shown so far.
Mourinho noted Mbappé arrived two days early for pre‑season, saying such behaviour “can mean something positive”. Getting more from Mbappé beyond his guaranteed scoring output may be crucial for a team rich in talent but without a major trophy in the past two seasons.
Mourinho also praised Mbappé’s historic World Cup achievements:
“I’m really happy that he made history in the World Cup… there are 25 world champion players, but only one is eternal the player who has the most goals in the World Cup.”
Mbappé, now 27, won the Golden Boot this summer with 10 goals, taking his career World Cup tally to 22. That keeps him one ahead of Lionel Messi, with both players surpassing Miroslav Klose’s previous record of 16.
As Mbappé continues rewriting football history, Mourinho’s challenge is clear: turn his extraordinary individual output into collective success.
