Global K‑Pop phenomenon BTS have stunned the music world by announcing they will not submit any of their work for consideration at the 2027 Grammy Awards. The decision arrived in a perfectly co‑ordinated move, with all seven members posting the same statement on Instagram a unified message that immediately rippled across the industry.
“We have decided not to enter the Grammys this year,” the translated statement read. “I hope that music can be heard and loved for what it is, rather than being divided by region or language.”
The announcement comes at a moment when BTS were widely expected to dominate major Grammy categories. Their comeback album Arirang became one of the year’s top‑selling records, and its lead single Swim soared to No. 1 in the US a strong contender for song of the year. Yet ironically, the track’s English‑language lyrics would have excluded it from the Grammys’ newly introduced Best Asian Pop Music Performance categ
Under the award’s rules, nominated songs must feature “meaningful use” of an Asian language. More than 80 per cent of Arirang is sung in English, placing BTS outside the category designed to spotlight Asian artists.
The creation of the new award has already sparked debate across K‑Pop communities online. While some welcomed the recognition, many fans argued the Grammys had boxed Asian artists into a niche rather than celebrating their global impact.
By stepping back, BTS have made a statement that goes beyond trophies one that challenges how the industry defines, categorizes and values music in an increasingly borderless world.
