Madonna’s long‑promised biopic once billed as the definitive retelling of her extraordinary life has officially been shelved, with the pop icon now revealing the behind‑the‑scenes breakdown that brought the project to a halt.
Announced in 2022, the film was set to be co‑written and directed by Madonna herself. But four years later, the ambitious project has dissolved, and the singer is finally explaining why. Speaking to Interview magazine, she said creative and financial clashes with Universal Pictures ultimately derailed the production, leaving her in a state of “limbo.”
Madonna recalled that while the studio stalled, she briefly explored scaling the project down only to be met with skepticism. “Maybe they just didn’t believe in me,” she said, recounting one executive’s remark: “We don’t believe you’d stay in Serbia more than four days.” Her response: “Did you read the script?”
“My whole life has been survival. I’m not going there for a holiday,” she added.
When the Universal deal collapsed, Netflix approached her about turning the story into a series. But even that path was complicated. Madonna explained she couldn’t use the original script despite having written it unless she bought it back from Universal “for an extortionist’s price.”
“Don’t ask. That’s just the way it goes,” she said.
Universal has not responded to her comments, leaving the future of any Madonna‑led screen project uncertain. For now, the biopic that once promised to chronicle her rise from New York grit to global superstardom remains unfinished a rare pause in a career defined by relentless reinvention.
