Obama Presidential Center Opens Its Doors, Marking a New Landmark for Civic Learning and Community Inspiration

The Obama Presidential Center officially opened to the public on Friday, drawing thousands of visitors eager to explore the sprawling 20‑acre campus dedicated to the life, legacy and public service of former US President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama.

Crowds filled the plaza, museum and library, which together house Obama‑era artifacts, books, public art, gardens, athletic spaces, walking paths, playgrounds and community facilities. The Obamas launched the opening with a special story‑time event for children and families, celebrating imagination and the power of storytelling, a theme central to the center’s mission.

They began with a reading of the beloved 1963 classic Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak, a book the Obamas have long cherished. “Reading Where the Wild Things Are has become a tradition,” said Emily Bittner, the center’s vice president of communications, noting that President Obama read it to children at the White House and Michelle Obama narrated the book’s 60th‑anniversary audiobook edition.

Hollywood actor LeVar Burton, along with librarian and mental‑health advocate Mychal Threets, joined Michelle Obama for the event. According to Bittner, the opening reflects the center’s core purpose: to help young people “discover their voices, explore new ideas, and develop the skills and confidence to shape the future.”

The Obamas personally greeted members of the public, marking what Bittner described as the culmination of years of planning and community partnership. “The Center belongs to everyone,” she said. “Opening Day represents not only the launch of a new cultural and civic destination, but the beginning of a new chapter focused on empowering future generations of leaders.”

Located in Jackson Park along Lake Michigan’s south shore, the eight‑story, $850 million center is fully funded through private donations via the Obama Foundation, with no public funds used.
