Neymar’s World Cup Hopes Rocked by Chaotic Substitution Blunder in Santos Defeat

2 min read

Neymar’s final chance to impress Brazil’s selectors descended into chaos on Sunday after a stunning officiating blunder saw him mistakenly substituted during Santos’ 3-0 loss to Coritiba a mix‑up that left the 34‑year‑old furious and could not have come at a worse moment.

The drama unfolded when Neymar briefly left the pitch for calf treatment. As he prepared to return, the fourth official inexplicably raised the substitution board showing his No. 10, sending on Robinho Jr in his place even though the paperwork clearly indicated teammate Gonzalo Escobar was meant to come off.

Stunned, Neymar attempted to re‑enter the field, only to be shown a yellow card. What followed was a heated confrontation with officials, culminating in the forward grabbing the substitution slip and holding it up to a TV camera to prove the error.

Santos later posted on X that “the fourth official got the substitution wrong,” calling it an “inexplicable error that was not corrected,” and noting that both TV coverage and the written note confirmed Escobar was the intended substitute.

The timing could hardly be worse. Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti is set to announce his World Cup squad on Monday, and has made it clear that Neymar’s selection will depend strictly on fitness and form, not reputation. Despite being Brazil’s all‑time top scorer with 79 goals, Neymar hasn’t played for the national team since 2023 due to injuries and knee surgery.

This season, he has managed six goals and four assists for Santos across all competitions respectable numbers, but overshadowed by Sunday’s fiasco. As he left the pitch, Neymar handed the captain’s armband to Escobar the very player who should have been substituted instead of him.

For a star fighting to reclaim his place on the world stage, it was the worst possible audition.
