Popovic Says Trump’s Presence at World Cup Clash Would “Motivate” the Socceroos

Australia coach Tony Popovic says it would be “wonderful” if US President Donald Trump attends the Socceroos’ FIFA World Cup showdown with the United States in Seattle, suggesting the high‑profile presence would only sharpen his team’s focus.

Trump is expected to be in the stands for the co‑hosts’ matches, including the June 19 group‑stage fixture at the 72,000‑seat Seattle Stadium. Some American commentators have already written off Australia’s chances, pointing to the United States’ 2-1 win in a friendly in Denver last November.

Popovic, speaking to reporters in Sydney, said he fully expects the US president to support his national team at the tournament. He added that the occasion and the scrutiny would serve as extra motivation for his players.

The build‑up to the match has also been shaped by comments from midfielder Jackson Irvine, who last week criticised FIFA’s decision to award Trump its inaugural Peace Prize. Irvine said the move made a “mockery” of the organisation’s Human Rights Policy and raised concerns about LGBT rights in the United States.

With the World Cup fast approaching, the political backdrop has added another layer of intensity to an already high‑stakes encounter.
