Madonna Slams Fans’ Obsession With Phones: “Put Them Away and Listen”

Madonna has voiced her frustration over what she sees as a growing cultural shift one where audiences are more focused on filming concerts than experiencing them.

Speaking after the premiere of Confessions 2: The Film at Manhattan’s historic Beacon Theatre, the pop icon said today’s crowds are too busy recording every moment on their phones to truly connect with the music.

The event enforced a strict no‑phone policy, with all devices locked away to ensure an uninterrupted experience.

Madonna described how the urge to document everything has reshaped modern life, but not her own philosophy. “I came into this world to do things, not just to watch,” she said, adding that audiences should be present rather than viewing concerts through screens.

Her frustration intensified after a recent performance with Sabrina Carpenter at the Coachella festival, where she looked out from the stage and saw “a sea of phone screens instead of faces.” She said it was unsettling and diminished the communal energy that live music is meant to create.

For Madonna, dance and performance are primal, collective experiences that connect people to each other and to something larger. But that connection, she warned, is being eroded as fans prioritise capturing the moment over living it.

Confessions 2 will be released on YouTube tomorrow, while her 15th studio album arrives on July 3. Although no tour has been announced yet, Madonna is set to perform at the FIFA World Cup final halftime show on July 19.
