A checkout feature designed to make supermarket trips faster and more convenient is about to disappear from Woolworths stores nationwide, with the retailer confirming it will phase out its Scan & Go Mobile payment system due to low customer uptake.
From Monday, most stores offering the mobile scanning option will switch it off, and by early July the feature will be removed entirely. Scan & Go Mobile allowed Everyday Rewards members to scan items with their phone and pay directly through the app no queues, no checkout, no fuss.
But Woolworths says the technology simply didn’t catch on. “While we are committed to trialling new ways to shop, we have made the decision to transition away from Scan & Go Mobile due to low customer uptake,” the company announced.
Customer feedback also revealed a practical flaw: juggling a phone, a basket and groceries at the same time wasn’t as seamless as hoped. Many shoppers found the process awkward, prompting Woolworths to explore a hands‑free alternative.
That alternative is already here. Scan & Go Trolleys, equipped with built‑in scanners and digital screens, have begun rolling out across selected stores for Everyday Rewards customers. The new trolleys allow shoppers to scan items as they place them inside no phone required.
The smart trolleys are currently available in parts of New South Wales, with plans to expand into Queensland, Western Australia and South Australia in the coming months.
Woolworths says the shift reflects its ongoing effort to refine checkout technology and make in‑store shopping smoother, even as it retires one of its more ambitious digital experiments.
