An Australian mother who staged an elaborate fake cancer diagnosis for her six‑year‑old son shaving his head, bandaging him and drugging him to make the lie believable has been sentenced to more than four years in prison.
The 45‑year‑old South Australian woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded guilty to one count of engaging in acts likely to cause harm to her child and 10 counts of deception. A District Court judge on Wednesday condemned her behaviour as “cruel”, “calculated” and “manipulative”.
The court heard that the deception began after the boy visited an ophthalmologist following an accident. From that point, the mother told her husband, relatives, friends and the school community that her son had eye cancer. She confined him to a wheelchair, restricted his activities and administered pain medication and supplements to maintain the illusion that he was undergoing radiation treatment.
Prosecutors said she “selfishly used her son as a prop” to extract thousands of dollars in donations, which she then spent to support what they described as “the life of the rich and famous”.
Her lawyer argued she had developed a gambling addiction after the pandemic and had “capitalised” on her son’s accident out of financial desperation, insisting she never intended to harm him. The court was told she has been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder and accepted responsibility by entering guilty pleas.
The judge, however, said the gravity of her actions warranted a significant custodial sentence to reflect the harm caused and the breach of trust involved.
