After more than a decade of deterioration, repeated court orders and several failed attempts to revive it, Rockhampton’s once‑prominent Plaza Hotel is finally headed to auction.
The seven‑storey, 66‑room property a familiar sight along the city’s highway strip has sat empty since closing its doors in 2014. In 2025, a court ordered the sale of the building, which has been owned by Chang Holdings since 1996. The auction is now scheduled for May 21.
Lloyds Auctions chief operations officer Lee Hames said the building’s condition is so poor that prospective buyers will not be permitted to inspect the interior. The site has been the subject of serious public health concerns, with Rockhampton Regional Council issuing a clean‑up order last year after discovering extensive waste, including discarded kitchen items, hazardous materials and significant rodent infestations.
Temporary fencing was installed to block public access, but with no response from Chang Holdings director James Chang, the council undertook the clean‑up itself and later billed the owner for the costs.
The long‑neglected hotel has become a symbol of stalled redevelopment in the region, and its upcoming sale marks the first real step toward giving the prominent site a new future.
