Anne Hathaway Says Her “Decades‑Long Awkward Phase” Finally Ended at 40 as She Embraces a New Era of Confidence

Hollywood star Anne Hathaway, gearing up for the release of The Devil Wears Prada 2, has revealed that she spent decades feeling awkward and anxious a phase she says only ended when she reached her 40s.

Speaking to PEOPLE, Hathaway admitted she struggled for years with stress around communication and social interactions, often feeling out of place even at the height of her career. Acting, she said, became her refuge because it allowed her to “memorize all of her lines” and avoid the discomfort of spontaneous conversation.

“I think I had the longest unbroken awkward phase in Hollywood,” she said. “Mine extended into my late 30s. I just didn’t feel like I could get comfortable anywhere. I’d want to walk into a room and be chill, but I couldn’t find my footing.”

As a child, Hathaway found talking “really difficult,” and she believes that early discomfort followed her well into adulthood. But everything shifted when she turned 40. “All of a sudden, the dress rehearsal was over. I realized it was never a dress rehearsal — it was life. It’s been happening the whole time.”

Now, she says, she’s done with awkwardness and fully embracing joy. “Turning 40, I found a different gear. I was no longer interested in living an awkward life. I just wanted to get to the fun part.”

Hathaway, now one of Hollywood’s most in‑demand actresses, says she no longer fears embarrassment or missteps. “It’s already gone as badly as it could. So what am I scared of? It happening again? Whatever. I’ll be okay.”

Her confidence comes at a busy moment: this year alone, she will headline five major films Mother Mary, the long‑awaited Devil Wears Prada 2, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, Verity, and The End of Oak Street.
