Bangladesh has improved its standing in the World Happiness Report 2026, rising seven places to rank 127th out of 147 countries. The country previously held the 134th position, marking a notable upward shift in this year’s global assessment.
In South Asia, the rankings show a mixed picture:
Nepal: 99th
Pakistan: 104th
India: 116th
Myanmar: 129th
Sri Lanka: 134th
At the bottom of the list, Afghanistan remains the world’s unhappiest nation, ranking 147th.
At the top end, Finland continues its remarkable streak, retaining the title of the world’s happiest country for the ninth consecutive year, followed by Iceland, Denmark and Costa Rica.
The findings were released Thursday in the 14th edition of the report, produced by the University of Oxford’s Wellbeing Research Centre, in partnership with Gallup, the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, and an independent editorial board.
Countries are ranked based on people’s self‑assessed life satisfaction, measured on a scale from 0 (worst possible life) to 10 (best possible life). The report draws on global survey data to evaluate how people feel about their lives, rather than relying solely on economic indicators.
Bangladesh’s rise suggests gradual improvements in wellbeing perceptions, even as the country continues to navigate economic and social challenges.
