Tasmanians will have a rare chance this week to meet Denmark’s King Frederik and Tasmania‑born Queen Mary as they arrive in Hobart for the final leg of their six‑day Australian tour. The royal couple has announced they will greet members of the public along Hunter Street on the Hobart waterfront from 4:30pm this Thursday.
This marks their first official visit to Australia since becoming King and Queen in 2024. Along with Tasmania, their tour includes stops in the ACT, the Northern Territory and Victoria.
Tasmanian Premier Jeremy Rockliff described the visit as an exciting moment for the state and encouraged locals to take part. “I encourage all Tasmanians to come along, bring flags, wear tiaras, and show the king and queen what makes our state the most magnificent place in our country,” he said.
Hunter Street will be closed to traffic during the royal walkabout, though the duration of the closure has not yet been confirmed. Bollards will be placed along both ends of the street to ensure the public can safely meet and interact with the royal couple.
The visit is expected to draw large crowds eager to welcome Queen Mary back to her home state and celebrate the royal couple’s first Australian tour as monarchs.
